Our Literacy Block starts with Word Study each day. We use three programs, Fundations, Words Their Way, and our weekly sight words.
Our Readers' Workshop often starts with a Read Aloud which focuses students' attention on a particular comprehension skill. Students then read independently at their own level, or cooperatively with a partner. During this time, guided reading groups meet to practice fluency and comprehension skills. Guided reading groups are based on flexible groupings of 2-5 children depending on their present reading level, needs, and progress with the particular skill being practiced.
We will be conferring with all students about their reading and writing on an individual basis as well. Students love reading with our "book buddies" from Mrs. Spinner's 4/5th grade class on Fridays!
We love our independent reading time. Each student has their own "just right" books at their individual reading level. We make connections and write about our reading. We also have opportunities to explore books outside of our level for fun. |

We had a special visit from Moritz,
the therapy dog! We read his special book with his friend,
Barry. Then, we wrote about our own "Gifts to Share".

| We are working on making mental pictures, or visualizing when we read. Here are some of our "most vivid mental images" from our Guided Reading groups! |
