Math

All elementary students in Burlington use the Mathland curriculum.  We will be learning skills such as classification, observation, patterns, number relationships, sorting by attributes, arithmetic, measurement, probability, and problem solving.

Note:  Our most recent work is at the top of the page, with the archives at the bottom.

We're working on more advanced skills like thinking of big numbers in terms of tens and ones.  This early work with place value will lay the foundation for more in depth number sense later on.

Our number stories get us thinking about tens and extras in another way.  We can add small numbers to 10 in our heads.

We are expanding our Math thinking about tens and extras, or tens and ones.  We can quickly add any small number to any 10, 100, or even 1000!

For example,

How old will Willy be in 20 years?  27!

What's 8 more than 100?  108?

If this year is 2008, what year will it be in 10 years?  2018!

  November/December

We are using many tools to help us build, create, and write equations.  We are practicing counting up, counting down, and using what we know about numbers to help us out.

If there are 4 bears on the bus and 2 more get on, how many bears are on the bus now?

4+2=6

There are 7 dots that live in this house.  If there are 4 living upstairs, how many live downstairs?

4 + 3 = 7

There were 8 dinosaurs swimming in the pool.  3 of them got out.  How many dinosaurs were left in the pool?

8 - 3 = 5

Our daily patterns get trickier every month.  Can you tell where the pattern repeats?

Our understanding of numbers grows every day!  First graders can tell you that this is 28, or 2 tens and 8 extras.

September

We are learning so much about numbers!  We made some classroom observations and created counting books.  Here are some of our bright ideas!

We are also building and recording addition equations.

  November

We have been learning about patterns, attributes, and other ways to organize data.

                                                      October

We create patterns with letters, numbers, shapes, colors, and body movements.  We can abstract our patterns to other symbols and predict what will come next.

We are also using Venn Diagrams to sort and classify objects by attributes.  Ask your child why some are outside of the rings and some are in the middle.  :)

October

Our first unit was Data Collection and Analysis.  We created beautiful self-portraits which we used to make a whole-class bar graph.  Our graph taught us a lot about our new friends.

We continued to collect more data about our classmates, such as our favorite foods, activities, and animals.  We used our data to practice tally graphs, picto-graphs, and bar graphs!  We are able to analyze our graphs and use them to get information.  What smart mathematicians we are!

During Morning Math, we count our days of school, practice using calendars, telling time, counting money, graphing weather, making patterns, counting, skip counting, and practice number stories!

Practicing word problems, which we call number stories, helps us merge our language learning with our math concepts!

We practice using our calendar each day.  We learn about how to read the date and make predictions about patterns and time.
We are working on our number sense.  In order to become automatic with our addition facts, we practice combinations to 10 in many ways.
